Shaun Abrahams adamant he's not politically captured

National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams says he is not politically captured and he demonstrated his independence by withdrawing criminal charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Speaking to Eye Witness News, Abrahams insists he did not bow to public pressure in making a decision to withdraw the case against the minister.

Even though there’s a massive political narrative out there associated with the matter, I hope my decision to withdraw the charges clearly demonstrated my independence.

Abrahams insists that he was not doing the bidding of any political powers by charging Gordhan and acknowledges that the decision has made him public enemy number one.

Never. Never at any stage and never will I be. I can assure the public out there and myself that that’s certainly not the case.

EWN reporter Mandy Wiener asked Abrahams why he decided to take up his current position in the NPA.

I felt I could make an immense difference as the head of this institution and since my appointment I think we've done a really good job but we can still do so much better as an institution.
