Improvements coming in social grant system

Amendments to the Social Assistance Act will lead to curbing costs in the process and make it easier for orphans to access grants, amongst other benefits.

Deputy director of the Department of Social Development, Brenton van Vrede said there are four amendments, one of which will allow applications who are not happy to lodge a grant application appeal directly with the Appeals Tribunal.

This will be more efficient. We are also looking at creating an inspectorate, an independent body, that will give us better oversight. A supplementary benefit fund will not only curb costs but improve benefit levels.

Foster care grants have to go through the courts and this takes long, so we're looking at making this process easier and increasing the child support grants.

Van Vrede told John Robbie it's still "early days" for these amendments which need to first go out for public comment.
