Couple starts Kgololo Academy in Alex to help boost township education

Social entrepreneurs with Waahida Tolbert and Thulani Mbatha have taken it upon themselves to provide quality private education for children in Alexandra township, Johannesburg.

They founded the Kgololo Academy after feeling frustrated about the education narrative in township schools.

Kgololo Academy is a university preparatory school which carries an uplifting academic culture.

The team are empowering young children in the township with critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills.

For us, it's about the ability to be given a chance to dream. The kids are already dreaming and thinking big.

Thulani Mbatha, co-founder of Kgololo Academy

The couples own son attends the academy and they say it holds them accountable to the community and shows how invested they are in the project.

We want the same thing for everyone else's child that we want for our own child.

Waahida Tolbert, co-founder of Kgololo Academy

The parents contribute 50% of the schools financing through fees and the other 50% through fund-raising initiatives.

They run a dual language programme in English and isiZulu and run an extended school day from 7:30 until 16;00.

Every year, Kgololo Academy will add another grade to the school as their cohort grows and advances to senior years.

They say the school was designed for and belongs to the community, explaining that they have also created other job opportunities for locals in the area.

Several staff members and parents called in testifying to the the great work and potential of the school.
