ANC balance of power shifts to opposing faction to President's - Steven Friedman

Steven Friedman, Director of the Centre for the Study at the University of Johannesburg says he is doubtful that Eskom's CEO Brian Molefe would make the list to be the next finance minister given his reaction to state capture report.

He says Molefe's reaction to the contents of the state capture report is going to make it difficult to be the possible candidate for the job.

Friedman thinks the walls are closing in on President Zuma. He is not in a position to make any drastic changes like cabinet reshuffling.

The watershed as far as this is concerned was last December when Nhlanhla Nene was fired and Des van Rooyen was put in his place.

Steven Friedman, Director of the Centre for the Study at the University of Johannesburg

We've had all sorts of scares about the Treasury being captured, so far it has not been captured, and the reason is that the forces in the society which don't want it to be captured are strong enough to prevent that.

Steven Friedman, Director of the Centre for the Study at the University of Johannesburg

Friedman provides analsysis about the current state of the ANC post the municipal election losses. The faction within the ANC that oppose those who are attempting to control the treasury, has strengthened.

It means that it is possible for people within the ANC who are opposed to them, to say things they couldn't say before the elections.

Steven Friedman, Director of the Centre for the Study at the University of Johannesburg

We dealing with a balance of power, the strong one being the one that protects Treasury.

Steven Friedman, Director of the Centre for the Study at the University of Johannesburg

And as for the next elections?

I will put my head on a block and say if the ANC does not at the end of next year elect a leader who is more acceptable to people in the cities than the current leader is, then it is in serious danger of losing it's majority in 2019.

Steven Friedman, Director of the Centre for the Study at the University of Johannesburg

In the longer term. I think the balance of power is going with those in the opposing faction to the President
