4 questions to ask before getting someone a gift

You can buy happiness if it's bought for someone else, says NetFlorist product buyer Marike van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe says that there is a lot of joy that comes from heartfelt gift giving.

She develops all the gifts on offer on the NetFlorist site and considers trends when putting up quirky products that South Africans love.

Gift giving should be a fun thing.

When it comes to buying gifts for loved ones, it's the thought and feeling that counts, says van der Merwe.

The most important thing about gifting is the emotion behind it.

Van der Merwe suggests that there are four different questions which will guide people to make better gifting choices:

1. How do you want the person to feel when they receive the gift?

2. What is their personality type or interests?

3. Is there some life-changing event that has happened in their recent past?

4. What is it that that person needs?

She says people tend to overspend on gifts and advises that families create a budget for each other over the holiday season.

Van der Merwe says that people should not be preoccupied with the price of a gift. Instead they should place importance on the value and meaning it holds to the recipient.

Whatever the gift is worth in money, is not necessarily what it is worth to the person.

It is important to give personal touches to any gift that it bought or made, says van der Merwe.

She also cautions that that people avoid buying gifts at the last minute.
