Water supply remains critical in many parts of the country due to the prolonged drought. Gauteng residents are experiencing water restrictions and local municipalities have been told to expect decreased supply from national government.
Spokesperson for the Department of Water & Sanitation, Sputnik Ratau, speaks to The Midday report about the crisis and what is in the pipeline to help the water shortage.
From 9 o'clock this morning we started the release of water from the Sterkfontein Dam.— Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for the Department of Water & Sanitation
Sterkfonteing Dam is the reserve dam for the Vaal Dam.
He says the re;ease of the reserves will tale 7 to 15 days to reach the Vaal Dam and Vaal river system and begin to alleviate the strain on the system.
The Vaal Dam stands at 25% currently.
