Road drain blockages are big danger during floods (and here's how to avoid them)

Professor at the UCT Department of Civil Engineering, Neil Armitage, says highway drain blockages can be avoided by ensuring that floodways for flood waters are open.

Several roads have been blocked after flash floods hit Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane.

It really comes down to better planning and preparation in the sense of trying to make sure that the floodways for flood water are open and unimpeded.

Prof. Neil Armitage, UCT lecturer

Armitage says something needs to be done to avoid this happening again.

If there is no maintenance, your pipes will get blocked. And that certainly needs to be attended to.

Prof. Neil Armitage, UCT lecturer

Maintenance is an issue but I feel like planning is a bigger issue. It is about how you create your roads, and how much thought you give into what happens when you get the kind of rains we are experiencing at the moment.
