Mahlobo denies criminal rhino poaching connection

Allegations have emerged in an Al Jazeera investigation on the weekend that Minister of State Security David Mahlobo has a relationship with Mpumalanga businessman known to be involved in illegal rhino horn trade.

A self-confessed criminal who owns a spa in Mbombela, boasts in the Al Jazeera report to having a relationship with the minister. The minister denies this and says he has never been to the man's house as has been claimed.

In a statement released, the minister expressed 'concern and disappointment' at the allegations being made in the Al Jazeera report.

In an interview with 702's John Robbie, spokesperson Brian Dube denied the allegations leveled against Mahlobo made in the documentary.

Earlier today, CapeTalk's Koketso Sachane spoke to Dube about Maholobo's response to the claims.

Other allegations relate to termination of contracts at the Kruger National park, but the minister stated that he does not get involved in matters of operation at the park.

The minister plans to take legal action against the various allegations. He is calling for police to take action against the self-confessed rhino poaching criminals.

He strongly believes there is no substance to what is being reported...and reserves the right to take appropriate action against those making these allegations.

The photo in question that has been shown, the minister indicates that the photo was taken at the spa itself when he was making use of its services, which other people in the area use.
