Insurance companies declare Gauteng floods a catastrophe

Several insurance companies have declared the recent Gauteng floods as catastrophic.

Executive Head for Claims at Santam, Ebrahim Asmal, says they have received over 900 claims so far.

When a situation like this has been declared a catastrophe, it means claims do get to be processed very quickly.

Asmal says the weather alerts that they send out to customers started being heeded after the 2012 hail storms that hit Gauteng.

He says this year's storm has been an exceptional one and they made sure they could help people in need.

We spoke to our suppliers and had a special assessment yards set up so that we can assess these claims quickly.
