Heated letters exchange between Hawks and NPA bosses over Gordhan

Letters exchanged between National Prosecuting Authority head Shaun Abrahams and head of the Hawks Berning Ntlemeza show how the Hawks were against the withdrawal of charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

On the day before the charges were withdrawn the head of the Hawks, Berning Ntlemeza said he is extremely concerned that he may drop the charges.

And he [Ntlemeza] says it is a considered view that the decision is not made in good faith, based on the evidence they have gathered. And it seems he has made the decision based on the noise made by politicians, civil society lobby groups and media sympathetic to the accused.

He says he believes the NPA has a strong case against Pravin Gordhan.

Helen Suzman Foundation and Freedom Under Law have asked the President to suspend Abrahams saying he is unfit to head the NPA.

President Jacob Zuma has sent Abrahams a letter giving him until 28 November to explain why he should not be suspended.
