Sars exceeds revenue target by R7-billion (can we stop worrying about them now?)

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) collected R980-billion - R7-billion more than their target – for the 2014/2015 financial year.

This represents a revenue increase of 9.6 percent year-on-year.

Listen to the audio (scroll down) for our interview of Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane.

Following that; listen to Rhodes Business School’s Prof. Matthew Lester. He discusses taxpayers’ worries about various "rumblings" at Sars.

We’re not being more aggressive in collecting taxes. We’re doing what is allowed by law. We do, however, scrutinise refunds more carefully.

Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane

Sars is in good working order. No doubt Judge Kroon will soon get to the bottom of the governance issues in a manner that will assure all of us that at least RSA’s tax collection function is of world class standard.

Prof. Matthew Lester (Rhodes Business School)

Everything is well at Sars. I’m not worried at all; we are resilient

Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane

These figures are quite an achievement! They are on track! It’s not as gloomy as it looked on budget day. I’ll sleep better tonight.

Prof. Matthew Lester (Rhodes Business School)

Sars is very aggressive. They might have to repay some of this. These numbers are provisional.

Dawie Roodt (Director and Chief Economist of the Efficient Group)

My mother had her bank account emptied by Sars! Now that she’s proved her innocence she has to wait!
