New biometric system knocking SA tourism - SA Airline Association

The biometric system at OR Tambo is said to be causing delays to international visitors arriving in South Africa as they have to undergo a fingerprint scan before they may enter the coutnry.

There are now concerns that the system is having an impact on the tourism industry.

Chris Zweigenthal, Chief Executive Airline’s Association of Southern Africa, says longer processing time is an issue particularly in peak hours, where visitors stand in queues for a long time.

Home affairs have admitted that this is caused by lack of resources and insufficient staff, but Zweigenthal says it is important that the department find solutions to the staffing shortfall.

Around the world we have problems of biometrics but it becomes a problems when you at arrive and you see that half the counter are not manned.

We are trying to get a solution driven process and we believe over the Christmas period they will manage to have sufficient staff but we would like to see that continue past January.
