Prasa's Popo Molefe paid back the money

On Tuesday chairperson of the Prasa Board of Control, Popo Molefe, paid back R680 000 for extra board meetings.

Speaking to CapeTalk's/702's Stephen Grootes, Molefe said the decision to pay board members was taken by the committee of human capital. This, after members were concerned that they were not being compensated for additional work done.

He says the policy allowed board members to be remunerated for extra sittings.

It was only in April this year that the decision was implemented without an agreement from the Auditor-General or ratification by the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters.

According to Molefe, the minister did not feel comfortable ratifying that decision and ordered them to pay back the money.

We have been working hard to make sure that we run a clean organisation and I did not want this little blemish to interfere with what has been an excellent job done by the board.

Molefe profusely denied allegations made by Lucky Montana, the former boss of Prasa, that Molefe increased the number of board meetings in order to make more money.

Molefe said if that was the case they would have demanded payment from the onset.

He says the board has been doing extra work without being paid and it was only from April that a decision was taken to pay for extra sittings.

I think somebody is scraping the bottom of the barrel to try and say if I am corrupt, (then) members of this board are like me.
