Andrea Mullineux 2016 "Winemaker of the Year" puts SA on the map

A South African-based winemaker has been recognised for her stellar range of local wines and contribution to putting the Swartland's on the global map.

The prestigious international magazine Wine Enthusiast named Andrea Mullineux 2016 "Winemaker of the Year".

Mullineux says she never expected such a great acknowledgment after only nine years in the industry.

The nomination came as a complete surprise, and to actually win was really amazing.

She describes her calling for winemaking as a combination of all the things she enjoys and interests close to her heart: science, art, travel, food and more.

Wine really ticked the box. I knew from when I was 17 that I wanted to be a winemaker.

Mullineux first visited the county in 2004 for an 6 month internship in Stellenbosch, but says she always loved South African wines.

After time in France, she met her husband and settled back in South Africa's Swartland to start her winery in 2007.

Her husband helps with the business and she also works with a select group of growers.

Mullineux says that her job is to make sure her grapes tell the story of the region, show variety, character and personality of the land.

She describes the winery as her first child, and employs 30 full time workers who do most work by hand.

Mullineux says they make shiraz from red grapes and chenin blanc and other blends with white grapes.

Take a listen to Andrea Mullineux unpack her journey, the impact of the drought and other industry issues:
