Justice Ministry extends deadline for comment on proposed hate crimes bill

Footage of two white men forcing a black man into a coffin has caused public outrage, calling for swift action by authorities over what's been labelled a hate crime.

The two men will remain in custody after choosing not to post a bail application during an appearance at the Middelburg Magistrate's Court yesterday.

In light of the issue, 702's John Robbie spoke to Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development John Jeffery regarding the proposed Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill.

I think it would be a hate crime. If it was done because the victim was black then that becomes a hate crime.

John Jeffery, Deputy Minister of Jusitce and Constitutional Development

He said that the state wouldn't have difficulty in proving the two men were motivated by motives of racial discrimination, which would confirm that this was a hate crime.

The deadline for submissions of comments for the proposed bill has been extended after a number of organisations made the request.

There's been a lot of requests to extend the deadline... There will be a further period for comment when the bill in introduced in Parliament and there will be public hearings.
