Hlaudi Motsoeneng to challenge Mthembu defamatory claims

African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu has lodged a legal claim against SABC group executive of corporate affairs Hlaudi Motsoeneng over 'defamatory and damaging comments'.

Motsoeneng had said in October that unless Mthembu refrained from making comments about him, he would release damaging information about Mthembu.

ANC parliamentary spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, says Motsoeneng's outrageous allegations against the Chief Whip should be challenged, because the he made statements could be interpreted as fact.

He seems to be motivated by certain things other than those that represent the agenda of the ANC in Parliament - to see SABC turning a corner and being well managed.

Mthembu has publicly criticised SABC's controversial editorial decisions and the appointment of Motsoeneng as the COO.

Lawyer representing Motsoeneng, Zola Majavu, says Motsoeneng stated he will defend his statements.

One of the issues that I traversed with him was whether or not there is any truth in what he is alleged to have done, to the extent that it is suggested to be of wrong doing. And the answer was in the negative. It is on that basis that I hold instruction to defend that action.
