Mthembu wants R1 million from Motsoeneng plus a public apology

South Africans are yet to see another controversial court case in the coming weeks.

The chief whip of the African National Congress, Jackson Mthembu, is reportedly suing South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) group executive of corporate affairs Hlaudi Motsoeneng for “malicious and defamatory claims” he made a few weeks ago saying Mthembu had attempted to 'capture' him.

Nicqui Galaktiou, Jackson Mthembu’s lawyer, says the statements made by Motsoeneng about Mthembu are unfounded and false, that's the reason he has instructed a legal firm to represent him.

Mthembu publicly criticised Motsoeneng's conduct and the board of the SABC that allowed him to be re-appointed to the position of group executive for corporate affairs.

We will ask the court to order that Motsoeneng pay the chief whip a sum of R1 million for the damages caused to his reputation and good name.

And secondly, to publish an unconditional public apology within a few days after a judgment has been granted.

Mthembu's lawyer says on November 2 they afforded Motsoeneng an opportunity to retract his statement and give a public apology acceptable to them.

He ignored that letter in which we advised him that we will be taking legal action which we did and summons were issued this week by the Johannesburg High Court.

Motsoeneng's lawyer Zola Majavu has indicated that they will fight this action.
