School's gender neutral uniform policy lauded

The school Governing Body Foundation has welcomed a decision by Westerford High School in Cape Town to have hair and jewellery regulations that applies to both boys and girls.

Tim Gordon, CEO of the Governing Body Foundation says "this is a beautiful illustration of democracy in action".

He says the school did not shy away from making an important decision and did not bury their heads in the sand after the recent widespread difficulties with school's code of conducts.

Democracy was allowed to work at Westerford but we need to allow democracy to work at all schools.

Tim Gordon, CEO of the Governing Body Foundation

I would hope that it is not going to be seen as universal in the sense that every school must do the same thing and come to the same decision.

Tim Gordon, CEO of the Governing Body Foundation

Gordon says that Westerford should be complemented for what they've done but other schools should also be given an opportunity to engage with parents and learners and come up with their own regulations.

He says Westerford's idea should not be seen as something every school should adopt.

Some communities and some schools don't want that sort of change and I hope that they will be allowed to make their own decisions in that regard. It shouldn't be a forced thing...

Tim Gordon, CEO of the Governing Body Foundation
