Transfer of land must be well executed - analyst

Julius Malema's calls for people to occupy land a recent EFF comment that 'if black people get the land back many problems will be over' has sparked a conversation around land distribution again.

This follows a recent racist incident in Mpumalanga where a black man was forced into a coffin by two white men and threatened to set it alight.

Political analyst Prof Somadoda Fikeni says while the issue of land ownership remains a pivotal issue in South Africa, there has not been sufficient forethought about the processes that need to be in place to ensure land redistribution occurs.

Whilst land is symbolically and historically important in our heritage, it will be an over simplification to say should you transfer land all problems will be over.

Prof Somadoda Fikeni, political analyst

A decision to give back land to black people if not well executed, it may lead to more misery.

Prof Somadoda Fikeni, political analyst

He says a decision like that would need more support in bulk infrastructure, agricultural training and for the entire resettlement process.

It ought to be a well thought out process to how that land is given, what other economic factors, social factors are needed to make it sustainable.
