TUT exams go ahead despite protests

Exams are underway at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). There have been some protests attempting to disrupt exams, but despite this, exams have gone ahead.

Disruptions have been occurring nationwide over the past months linked to calls for free education.

TUT spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter, confirmed all the exams on the campus and satellite campuses started this morning.

There have been some protests on the satellite Soshanguve North and South campuses.

Yesterday a bus was burnt, and this morning again there were sporadic disruptions.

Willa de Ruyter, TUT spokesperson

She reports that campus security together with Saps has contained the situation and it is currently under control.

We have arranged transport for students from the Soshanguve campuses to the Tshwane Event Centre where they are writing, and that has been going well...police have been helping...and students are safe.

Willa de Ruyter, TUT spokesperson

Students have to show their personalised exam timetables and student identification cards before being allowed on campus and on buses. No food or liquids are allowed on buses.

Listen to Willa de Ruyter outline details about how they are ensuring students writing exams remain safe:
