Proposed plan for higher education funding on the cards

Higher Education Director General Gwebinkundla Qonde, and the Chairperson of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Sizwe Nxasana have presented the Ministerial Task Team's (MTT) recommended model to the Presidential Commission on Higher Education and Training.

The Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme makes various recommendations that are currently under consideration for implementation.

Nxasana summarised the proposed plan for higher education funding

  1. Poor students will be fully subsidised as opposed to current NSFAS model which only combats 40% first and second year to grants.

  2. Missing middle students will get grants.

  3. There will be focus on the additional support, which includes academic support, psycho-social support and link the students with employers.

Funding will come from public sector sources- government departments that are currently channeling all the funding through NSFAS. Part of the funding will come from private sector.

Sizwe Nxasana, NFSAS Chairperson

Nxasana said NFSAS will continue to exist, but there will be other structures developed to work with NFSAS.

Listen to Nxasana below to hear more about the recommended funding model...
