Warning signs that you're suffering from work burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion which is a result of excessive and prolonged stress.

Professionals, particularly those working as caregivers, become overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands, explains behavioural psychologist Dr Helgo Schomer.

It can be caused by by emotional or financial stresses, compromised personal values, loss of control or lack of community at work.

Work burnout can lead to disinterest and poor productivity and lack of energy or motivation.

Dr Schomer advises that people need to learn to take burnout seriously and help prevent it from the onset, when warning signs start to appear.

Listen to your body. Eventually you are finished and you're tired. Before you collapse, its a good idea to say I need a service.

He says that the body gives signs of burnout in different stages.

Here are some things to watch out for:

Stage 1:

  • forgetfulness
  • irritability and heightened anxiety
  • difficulty sleeping
  • inability to concentrate -headaches
  • back pain and shoulder tension

Stage 2:

  • late arrivals to work
  • procrastination
  • less intimacy with partners
  • persistently tired
  • cynicism and ' I don't care attitude'
  • more dependence on other substances

Stage 3:

  • state of constant melancholy
  • chronic stomach problems
  • mental fatigue
  • persistent tension
  • a desire to isolate yourself from friends, family, work
  • negative thoughts consume you

Dr Schomer suggests that people must know their limits, recognise the warning signs, stay healthy and seek outside or professional help.
