In February this year EWN reporter Stephen Grootes signed a non-disclosure agreement to interview Ajay Gupta, and had no control of the cameras and the recording.
As part of the agreement the interview was planned to be released the following day "after a light edit".
Grootes says he then asked if he could bring his own equipment to record the interview as well, in case the edited version was taken completely out of context. The agreement was that they would only return his recorder once they have published the interview from their side.
He says his machine has never been returned, but the interview has now been published on YouTube.
He says at the time the big story was that Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane had gone to Switzerland to help the Guptas broker the deal to buy the Optimum Coal Mine from Glencore.
In the interview Ajay Gupta denied knowing Zwane, but Zwane's spokesperson had confirmed the trip.
In the interview he seems to deny that he knew Des Van Rooyen, and now we know that can't be true. Someone in the family must have known him.— Stephen Grootes, EWN reporter

Grootes still doesn't know why the interview was never published or why the PR company Bell Pottinger organised this interview.
He says he has decided to write about it because it is now on a public domain.
