Pikoli - Political interference lingers at NPA, Gordhan charges mind boggling

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority, Vusi Pikoli, says the political interference that led to his removal seems to be still hanging over the prosecuting body.

Two days before his suspension Pikoli says he received two letters, one was from Minister of Justice at the time, Brigitte Mabandla asking him to stop investigating former national commissioner of the South African Police Service, Jackie Selebi.

The intention was to arrest him and prosecute him so I received a letter from her stopping me from doing that.

Pikoli says he refused to listen to Mabandla and continued to have a meeting with the President who in turn informed him that he was not sensitive enough on matters of national security.

All those issues were issues outside the NPA.

Pikoli says he finds Shaun Abrahams decision to charge Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on a matter that is not fit for prosecution a bit mind boggling.

If you look at the facts of the case, it is startling to find that prosecutors of Torie Pretorius and Shaun Abrahams calibre could prosecute on the facts of the matter.

The subsequent withdrawal was inevitable because there is no way in which they could've successfully prosecuted.
