Kathrada remembers Castro as close anti-apartheid and ANC ally

Ahmed Kathrada has lauded former Cuban leader, Fidel Castro for his role in supporting the liberation struggle during the apartheid era.

Speaking to 702's Stephen Grootes, he said the ANC's (African National Congress) close ties with Cuba was significant as the party had few supporters in their plight for freedom.

Messages of condolences have continued to pour in since the news broke, with many remembering the 90-year-old as a model revolutionary socialist leader.

During our struggle for freedom, we needed allies. Among the few countries in the world that supported us was Cuba under Fidel Castro.

Castro governed Cuba for 49 years and ceded power to his younger brother Raul Castro in 2006.

His ashes will be taken on a countrywide tour starting in Havana and ending in Santiago. His remains will be buried on Sunday, December 3 at Tanta Ifigenia cemetery.
