Does new Public Protector believe Madonsela violated the law?

Sunday Times reporter Qaanitah Hunter in her story over the weekend revealed how new Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhebane, laid charges against her predecessor, Advocate Thuli Madonsela for "leaking" the transcript of her interview with President Jacob Zuma during her compilation of her State of Capture report.

Criminal charges have been laid against Madonsela at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria.

Hunter said the charges are as a result of Zuma trying to rubbish this report, saying he wasn't afforded the opportunity to respond to these allegations as per his rights. The transcript of Madonsela's interview with Zuma was given to a broadcast channel after the report was finalised. Legally Madonsela was allowed to release the transcript after her investigation was completed, Hunter explained.

The President didn't take lightly to this and he raised the complaint. Public Protector (Mkhwebane) agreed to some sort of inquiry into how it (the transcript) got into the public domain.

It will be interesting to see what the Public Protector sees coming out of this.

Hunter told Kieno Kammies that time will tell when Mkhwebane releases the second part of the State of Capture report. Listen here:

On Monday afternoon the Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane denied laying charges against former Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela.

EWN's Gia Niccoliades reports that Mkhwebane says she opened the case at the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria requesting an investigation into an alleged leak, to establish if leaks amount to a breach of a Section of the Public Protector Act. She is calling on the police to investigate the leaked interviews form the Public protector's office.
