Fawu march to protest sugar tax

The food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) are proposing a march in protest against the proposed sugar tax.

General Secretary Katishi Masemola spoke to Charlotte Kilbabane (standing in for Stephen Grootes) on the Midday Report about why the union has decided on this action.

He says the successful implementation of a sugar tax will result in between 5000 and 6000 job losses.

Masemola acknowledges that the union supports health concerns such as obesity in the country, but does not feel a sugar tax that targets only sugary drinks is the solution.

We must use health policies to achieve that.

We are just worried that only sugary drinks are earmarked for this tax instrument, yet we know there are lots of other foodstuffs that leads to obesity.
