Woman returns to pay R1 300 restaurant tab after 'dine and dash'

UPDATE: 'I wasn't thinking rationally', says woman who ducked R 1 300 restaurant bill

The hospitality industry is bustling in the Mother City as the summer season sees more patrons dining out.

But there's also an increase in chance takers, as seen from popular CCTV footage from this weekend.

A couple ran up a R1 300 tab at Fat Cactus Café in Gardens on Saturday, and opted not to pay after spending the entire afternoon there 'splurging' on drinks and food.

Fat Cactus' Celeste Perry says the couple spent over 6 hours at the restaurant before doing a disappearing act.

She posted the CCTV footage on her personal Facebook account, asking for help to identify the pair.

The video shows the man getting up first and the young woman making a duck for it shortly after.

The 'dine and dash' incident has sparked discussions online and the Facebook post has been shared widely.

In less than 24 hours, the post was liked over 300 times, received nearly 500 comments and more than 9 000 shares.

As a result of the viral post, the young woman came forward on Tuesday to apologise and settle the bill from the weekend.

I'm so happy that this has gone as viral as it has. Just to make people aware that they can't get away with it.

The woman says her dining partner claimed he was going to wash his hands when he made a run for it.

Perry had initially planned on laying criminal charges, but now feels the social embarrassment of the video will suffice.

The restaurant will instead give the waitress her cut of the tip, and donate the rest of the money to a good cause.
