A fragmented ANC is bad for the country - Mantashe

African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Gwede Mathashe referred to the criticism that the ANC is putting the its needs before the needs of the country as blackmail.

He says first and foremost the ANC is an organisation that has its own structures saying he ANC debates matters and comes to an agreed conclusion. Mantashe said the recalling of former President Thabo Mbeki was a combined decision and now they ANC cannot take calls from the opposition parties to fire the President.

The party’s national executive committee (NEC) during its three-day meeting took a decision that it does not support the call for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

This debate was debated for three days and it was difficult sometimes, very robust and very painful but at the end of the day the NEC was split into two on the issue.

Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary General

We took a decision that let's work on the unity of the ANC because this organisation must be viable, united and strong. A fragmented ANC is bad for South Africa.

Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary General

Mantashe says the party has heard the message of the people through the ANC's performance in the local government elections and they are working on reconnecting with the people and fixing mistakes.

One of the things we have done, we have been talking to people through regions, talking to structures of the ANC and talking to sectors of society. We have reported what we are doing to correct certain mistakes.
