SA on the lower rungs of global maths and science ladder (but we have improved)

Executive director at the Human Sciences Research Council, Dr. Vijay Reddy, says South Africa is at the lower levels of the participating countries in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study.

However Reddy says there have been improvements since 2003.

Over time, if we look from 2003 to 2015, we found that for mathematics our national score increased by 87 points.

Dr. Vijay Reddy, executive director at the Human Sciences Research Council

We have moved from a position of very low to low. The improvement is good. But there is still a way to go before we reach the levels that we would find acceptable for the country.

The study also highlighted that social issues such as having books, flushing toilet at home and learning in your home language, have a correlation with the Maths and Science results.
