Panic buttons connect vulnerable women and children to 24 hour command centre

The Gauteng Department of Social Development is set to launch a new service aimed at issuing women, children and the elderly with panic buttons to give them direct access to emergency services in time of need.

Spokesperson for Department of Social Development, Lumka Oliphant, says the panic buttons will be linked to the department's 24-hour Gender-Based Violence Command Centre.

When a button is pressed, a distress signal will be send to the police for immediate response.

With the command center you don't have to tell us where you are we can Geo-locate you.

Oliphant says this is not only for women, children and the elderly but also for men who are often stigmatised.

She says they are also going to incorporate a disability enhancement tool to the command centre where they'll be able to offer sign language services at SAPS for when cases of abuse are being reported by blind and deaf people.

The service will be launched on Thursday, she says.
