'I wasn't thinking rationally', says woman who ducked R 1 300 restaurant bill

A Cape Town woman has come forward to share the circumstances which led to her ditching a R 1 300 bill at a local restaurant.

Sacha Geere is her name, and she settled the tab on Tuesday, after she and her male companion were exposed on Facebook 'dining and dashing' at the Fat Cactus Café in Gardens on Saturday.

She says she was not thinking rationally at the time and explains that a series of unfortunate events led to the incident.

According to Geere, she was mugged on Friday night and the man she was with on Saturday offered to take her out to help recover from the ordeal.

He said I need to be spoiled served, and treated like a lady. We went there and he just ordered more and more and more.

Sacha Geere

But when their meal arrived, the gentleman apparently left after claiming he was going to wash his hands.

She says she waited for 10 minutes before going to look for him near the men's bathroom, and when she realised he was gone, she panicked and broke into tears.

I waited for him for 10 minutes.. I couldn't find him and started crying with the waiter and manger time. They took me to the back. I was in shock.

Sacha Geere

She waited with restaurant management for 20 minutes then got up and left the premises in a panic, distraught from the night before.

Geere advises that people who are judging her may have never been through her ordeal.

I was not thinking in a rational sense. It's not normal behaviour to walk out of a restaurant.

Sacha Geere

It is apparently not the first time that the male companion has skipped out on a dinner tab.

Geere says she was conned by him and has opened a case and started a campaign to get a hold of the man.
