World Aids Day: WC Health focusing on HIV/Aids awareness for teen girls

December 1st is World Aids Day. To mark the day CapeTalk's Breakfast is broadcasting live from the boardroom of Cipla Medpro in Bellville. Cipla is South Africa's leading pharmaceuticals company.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies spoke to Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape MEC for Health, about programmes in her department which focus on the HIV/Aids pandemic.

Mbombo says the department continues with existing established campaigns: creating awareness on the use of condoms, urging men to circumcise, counselling and access to ARV treatment.

She says globally, there's a challenge of dealing with the increased number of new infections in young women, sex workers and gay men. The department is currently working on a number of strategies to create awareness and also come up with interventions that will have high impact.

The program on the young women and girls focuses on the 10 - 18 age group. We work closely with NPOs and after school programs to target the schools.

We also have another program focusing on the 19 - 24 year olds because they are more vulnerable, some of them no longer have access to social grant and you find that the issue of transitional sex happens there - the blesser and blessee situation.
