Eusebius McKaiser's hard-hitting Q&A with Buti Manamela on SA youth

Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Buti Manamela, has highlighted the ongoing challenges the country is faced with in efforts to create employment opportunities for youth.

According to Stats SA, youth unemployment in South Africa currently stands at 36.1%.

Manamela said there are various structural issues that need to be addressed to enable young people to think of their future differently in current conditions.

I think various interventions have been made for the last 15 to 20 years to try deal with the structural challenges.

Buti Manamela, Deputy Minister in the Presidency

Speaking to 702/Cape Talk's Eusebius McKaiser, he said it was important to understand the domino effect of the global economic slowdown on South Africa's progress since the advent of democracy. The economy is currently growing at 0.5%.

He said that calls for radical economic transformation are valid as patterns of the economy's ownership remained as it was before 1994.

The major question is around the fact that some of the things we have done in 1994 are not bearing any fruit, that's why there's talk about radical economic transformation.
