SA soldiers almost sent home due to food shortages

It is reported that soldiers in Mpumalanga‚ Gauteng‚ and Limpopo were ordered to return home after rations started running low on Sunday.

Pikkie Greef, SA National Defence Union (SANDU) Spokesperson, says at this stage they are still investigating why there were rations shortages.

He says the South African Defence Force (SANDF) is legally obligated to provide meals for members that are living-in on bases daily.

The only explanation that was offered to our lawyers was that the money that was authorised for procuring the rations for some reason, they were not purchased or delivered. We are still trying to find out what was the reason for that.

The complaints came to us because some of the soldiers stay 100 kilometres away and don't have money to travel to their homes.

If the small things aren't going right in the military, then the potential for disaster is very big.

Immediate intervention by SA National Defence Union led to the SANDF backtracking on its plans to send soldiers home and sending food to the affected bases.
