Lonely zebra found grazing on Germiston golf course ends up in happy herd

Arno de Klerk, inspector for NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit explains how the unit received a call from a passer-by who saw a zebra grazing on a golf course in Germiston.

They went out to assess the situation with transport box and veterinarian in tow.

We darted the animal and took her to a place of safety.

Arno de Klerk, inspector for NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit

He says they have no idea where the zebra came from, but says they have reports of more and more people keeping these kind of animals on private properties without permits.

So if the animal does escape, they don't come forward and claim the animal because of the fines they might receive.

Arno de Klerk, inspector for NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit

He says the errant stripey animal has been kept in a boma for a few days and assessed, but she has now been released on the reserve to join the zebra herd.

She will live out the remainder of her life as a wild zebra doing what wild zebras do.
