HIV home-testing not final diagnosis - SA AIDS Council

HIV home-testing kits are not final, warns the South African National AIDS Council (Sanac).

Sanac CEO Dr Fareed Abdullah says that while the test is useful, it is not a confirmatory test, but rather a screening test.

The public must know that the self-test is a screening test, it's not a diagnosis.

Dr Fareed Abdullah, Sanac CEO

He explains that the home-testing kit is helpful for a lot of vulnerable groups that want to initially test in privacy.

Abdullah reflected on the gains made by Sanac's National Strategic Plan (2012 – 2016) and the goals for the next five years.

He says the council has done well on HIV/Aids treatment, but did not meet its targets for prevention - particularly in young women.

When it comes to prevention, we've only had partial success.

Dr Fareed Abdullah, Sanac CEO

Abdullah advises that the new strategic targets need to be supported by intervention programmes and should translate HIV/Aids knowledge into change behaviour.

Dr Abdullah talks about the lessons learnt and way forward here:
