A downgrade by S&P would be unfair - Zweli Mkhize

ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize says the government has done enough to secure the country's economic future.

Mkhize spoke at an Investec breakfast meeting in Sandton as the country continues to wait for the S&P Global Ratings decision.

EWN reporter Clement Manyathela says Mkhize believes as a country South Africa has reached a threshold and the economy is recovering, and it would be unfair for the economy of this country to be downgraded.

He started off by saying the violent and destructive violent action is currently being looked at by the current government. He said the fact that these discussions are currently underway is a sign that shows the country is trying to avoid being downgraded to junk status.

He also touched on the minimum wage. He says the fact that the proposal has been put on the table speaks volumes.

Mkhize also indicated that they have mentioned all this to the ratings agency to show them that there are measures in place to ensure proper growth in the economy.

After months of assessing South Africa's economic and political affairs, S&P is expected to give its review verdict on Friday.
