Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital is finally a reality

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital was launched on Friday in Johannesburg. For a very long time the Red Cross Children's hospital has been the only hospital in the country that has catered for needs of children.

The new hospital has 200 beds and 10 theatres and can treat up to 2500 patients per month.

Vuyo Lutseke, media and communications officer at Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust, says they wanted to make sure that the hospital is on par with international standards.

This is one step closer to improving children's health care in South Africa.

Lutseke says they are very proud of the children who gave their piggy banks saving and made a contribution in funding the building of the hospital.

She says it is important to have children investing in philanthropy.

We have children around the country, around the continent who are doing whatever they can to give a little bit to making this hospital a reality.
