Transformative Maputo-Catembe Bridge Project nears completion

2 December 2016 5:31 PM
Nikiwe Bikitsha finds out the progress in the construction of one of Africa's largest infrastructural projects.

The Maputo-Catembe Bridge Project in Mozambique is set to be completed in 2017.

The construction of one of the African continent's largest infrastructural projects started in 2012. It will replace the ferry system and various road systems that transport goods and tourists from South Africa and Swaziland into Mozambique.

A structure like this has to be durable for at least 100 years

Dean Swanepoel, Quality and Materials Manager at GAUFF

The project is jointly managed by the Mozambique and Chinese governments.

The Maputo-Catembe Bridge is expected to be a significant gateway to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and boost trade and tourism in the region.

One of the biggest issues within Maputo is traffic congestion. This bridge will alleviate the congestion immensely because we are connecting into two of the major arterials in Maputo

Lawrence Greene, Senior Roads Manager at GAUFF

The bridge is designed in a way that will not disrupt the flow of different modes of transport in Maputo.

It is also expected to create 1 500 jobs in Mozambique over the next two years.

It will be a tremendous asset to Maputo and its citizens

Dean Swanepoel, Quality and Materials Manager at GAUFF
