Gauteng Health court order stops mortuary employees strike

A strike by employees in Gauteng government mortuaries has created backlogs as some families have had to delay funerals.

On Friday a mother phoned on the Afternoon Drive show saying she was forced to delay funeral arrangements as the mortuary could not release the body.

Gauteng MEC Health Qedani Mahlangu says the department has secured court orders stopping unions from striking.

She says all affected mortuaries will be back to their normal working routines tomorrow.

Mahlangu says the department is aware that the implementation of occupational specific dispensation left a many workers in a less fortunate situation regarding remuneration..

Their remuneration in terms of salaries is something that they are concerned about.

All these issues are not provincial issues, they have to be taken through to the bargaining council.
