Freedom under Law (FUL) and the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) appeared in the Pretoria High Court to challenge the appointment of Berning Ntlemeza as head of the Hawks.
The Lobby groups brought the application earlier this year, but the court ruled it wasn't urgent.
Nicole Fritz, Executive Officer for Freedom Under Law, says the decision to appoint Berning Ntlemeza was an irrational one.
They have a clear pronouncement by the High Court that Ntlemeza is a dishonest person, lacking in integrity and has a contemptuous attitude towards the rule of law.— Nicole Fritz, Executive Officer Freedom Under Law
On that basis we argue that he is not fit and proper for this high office and the decision to appoint him must be set aside.— Nicole Fritz, Executive Officer Freedom Under Law
Fritz says it is important that a person leading the Hawks should have the utmost integrity and whose honor and judgement could not be called into question.
