School governing body calls for expulsion in serious bullying cases

Two incidents of bullying were recorded at Lückhoff High School in Stellenbosch. The video recordings made their rounds on social media, and the provincial department of education condemned the bullying incidents.

The school has acknowledged that it is struggling with behavioral challenges among learners.

Paul Colditz, CEO Federation of Governing Bodies of SA Schools, says good values need to be instilled in these children to learn to have respect for one another.

But if that fails there should be rules and policies in place to deal with bullying and in serious cases there should be expulsion.

Serious would mean a serious infringement of dignity of another person.

Paul Colditz, CEO Federation of Governing Bodies of SA Schools

School governing bodies cannot expel learners from the school property permanently but can only recommend to the department.
