ANC rebukes SABC delegation for Parliamentary walkout, brands it disgusting

7 December 2016 5:50 PM

ANC Parliamentary spokesman Moloto Mothapo says Parly looking at legal action against delegation for disrespecting constitution.

Parliament’s ad hoc committee looking into the South African Broadcasting Cooperation (SABC) and its board began its hearing today.

The SABC delegation staged a walkout while SA's Auditor General was speaking, complaining that reports were not available in braille as had been requested for remaining committee member Mbulaheni Maguvhe.

ANC Spokesman in Parliament, Moloto Mothapo, says their action demonstrates an open contempt and disrespect for the constitutional function of Parliament and its right to hold an inquiry.

It's something that is unprecedented and illegal if you look at the act that governs the conduct in Parliament.

Moloto Mothapo, ANC parliamentary spokesperson

The inquiry must continue, but in the meantime I think it would be appropriate for Parliament to look into the matter legally, see if whether their conduct and attempt to disrupt the committee meeting is not something that can be challenged illegal.

Moloto Mothapo, ANC parliamentary spokesperson

The other public institutions that are accountable to Parliament will come and do the same and we will never have respectable Parliament.
