Parliamentary adhoc committee slams SABC delegation walkout

The adhoc portfolio committee looking into the SABC (South African Broadcast Corporation) board's fitness to hold office believes the walkout by the broadcaster's delegation was disingenuous.

In an interview 702's John Robbie, committee chairperson Vincent Smith said the request for documents to be made available in braille came at the eleventh hour.

He said the Office of the Public Protector, Auditor-General and ICASA (Independent Communications Authority of SA) all confirmed there had not been a request for braille documents at any stage.

A minute before the proceeding, they raised the issue of braille. I recognise the disability but I think this was not a genuine request.

SABC board chairperson, Mbulaheni Maguvhe, alongside his legal team and SABC executives James Aguma and Hlaudi Motsoeneng walked out during the proceedings yesterday.

ANC Chief Whip, Jackson Mthembu, labelled the walkout as disgusting in a scathing statement issued yesterday.

The public broadcaster has been marred by reports of hundreds of millions lost, various board member resiginations and a leadership vacuum that has seen Motsoeneng as the only executive remaining due to purges over the years.

We are going to continue with proceeding. If at all the professor feels that it was unfair, he's got legal recourse to take it on review.
