New child passports in lieu of unabridged birth certificate next year

The Department of Home Affairs will introduce new passports for minors that will replace the need for an unabridged birth certificate when traveling.

The child passports pilot will roll out from February next year and will include parental details.

The tourism industry has been complaining since June 2015 about the stringent visa regulations which require minors to carry unabridged certificates when traveling in and out of the country.

DHA's Western Cape Manager Yusuf Simons explains that the child passport has been designed in response to issues raised over the laws.

So when you apply for a passport, you automatically get an unabridged birth certificate's details inside. You don't need to apply for both anymore.

Yusuf Simons, Western Cape Home Affairs manager

The DHA has developed prototypes and is finalising the testing phase before issuing the passports.

Parents with existing child passports will have to apply for an unabridged birth certificate or the the new document when it is released.

The department will issue official letters granting permission to travel to those who have waited longer than 8 weeks after applying for an unabridged birth certificate.

The minor's passport is set to be the main travel document.
