Education Dept insists condoning 20% for mathematics is a policy intervention

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has come under criticism after it announced that Grade 7 to 9 learners who obtained 20% for mathematics would be condoned to pass onto the next grade.

This after it released its Special Condonation Dispensation Report, which the department claims would only be implemented for the 2016 academic year.

We're saying that for a national senior certificate, you really don't need to pass at 40% if you're not going to do maths.

Matanzima Mweli, Department of Basic Education

Director-General of DBE, Matanzima Mweli, spoke to 702's John Robbie about why the recent measures have been introduced.

He said the intervention came after nation-wide consultation by Minister of Education, Angie Motshekga, with trade union representatives, teachers and principals.

What is the rationale of insisting that a pre-condition of a learner to pass should be to pass mathematics at 40% when the majority of them will not do mathematics at Grade 10?
