The important thing we need to realise is that the syndrome is something that's quite common under marathon - and especially ultra-marathon - runners. Typically, they will undergo a great amount of physical and mental stress during a race and also during the preparation for a race. Once that runner's high - which typically lasts for about 24 hours after the race - has worn off. It is common for a post-marathon depression to ensue in the weeks after the big event such as for instance, this weekend's Two Oceans Marathon.
