Govt looks to Asian countries in hopes of turning education (and maths) around

The Department of Higher Education and Training is hosting a three-day indaba in Pretoria aimed at addressing the challenges facing South Africa's schooling system.

Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga admitted that government needed urgent intervention in order to allay the crisis in the teaching and learning profession.

Recently, the department announced it would condone Grade 7 to Grade 9 learners who obtained 20% mark in mathematics to proceed to the next grade for the 2016 academic year.

One needs to have a comprehensive solution and one that focuses on schools that need it most such as schools in poor areas.

702's Africa Melane spoke to former director-general in the department and education consultant, Bobby Soobrayan, regarding the matter.

As discussions continue, experts have advised borrowing elements from eastern countries' education curriculum as what could be the silver bullet.

Clearly they are doing something right, one of which is the curriculum... One would look at refining the curriculum and interventions that Asian countries are taking.
