How to keep safe this swimming season

At least 11 people have drowned at beaches and lagoons in the Western Cape since last weekend.

In the latest incident, two men were confirmed dead on Sunday at Monwabisi Beach in the Cape Metropole and in Sedgefield Lagoon in the Southern Cape.

Dr Cleeve Robertson CEO at the National Sea Rescue Institute says a lot of the drownings happen in fresh water bodies including dams.

Robertson suggests several precautions to take during this swimming season:

  • Children must be supervised at all times.

  • Public pools may get crowded so always know where your children are.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol before or during swimming.

  • When visiting a beach ensure there is a lifeguard and swim between the warning flags.

  • If there is no lifeguard on call, do not swim if you are not a trained rescuer. Rather throw something floatable to the drowning victim so they are able to hold onto the item while they wait to be rescued.

  • Always keep an emergency number on your child.
